Beyoncé: Lives of the Musicians, 2021 (Laurence King/Hachette)

Beyoncé was a shy child. Within a couple of decades, she had become one of the most famous women in the world. My book charts the life behind the hit songs, from the scrutiny she faced fronting Destiny’s Child to the hysteria over her body, sensuality and politics as a solo artist. The music industry hardly supported young Black women performers like her. But she carved out a singular position in pop culture. For years, she had no guarantee of success. And still, that Texan girl became ‘Queen Bey.’

Though I didn’t set out to be a cliché, I wrote this in my kitchen during lockdown. Click here to buy it. You can read a chapter extract on i-D, and an interview I did about the book on VICE.
